The Food & Civil Supplies department is basically a service department which implements the Public Distribution System(PDS) as per the GOI guidelines to provide essential commodities (foodgrains) to the people especially the poorer section at subsidized rate and act as an effective agency in checking inflationary market price of essential commodities.

Prior to Statehood and even after attaining Statehood till early part of 1980’s the Government air lifted essential commodities such as foodgrains and salt to far flung rural places where there is no access of road and road facilities. However, with a passage of time after the improvement of communication the State Government extended distribution of essential commodities through Fair Price Shops. At present 1618 FPSs (1323 Rural and 295 Urban) in the state for distribution of foodgrains to the targeted beneficiaries.

The State has implemented the National Food Security Act’2013(NFSA) in the month of July’2016, initially with two districts namely Kohima & Dimapur followed by the rest of the districts w.e.f. August’2016.

With the introduction of end-to-end Computerization of TPDS operation in the state as per direction of Supreme Court Order, the delivery system is improving with transparency in transaction(s), which is now in public domain i.e. in the National Portal and State Portal as well.
